Tus Amigos - La Mejor Cocina

Tus Amigos is a funny little restaurant in Los Osos that our family loves to frequent. The menu is posted on the wall as you enter, conveniently located near the cash register where you place your order. Menu items are purchased individually or in "plates" which include beans and rice for dinner, and eggs, beans, potatoes and choice of tortilla for breakfast.

Breakfast is served until 11:00am daily. Although most Mexican restaurants have few choices for folks who want nothing but sugar for breakfast, Tus Amigos has thoughtfully included such items as pancakes and french toast as well as the standard huevos (egg) dishes. Prices for breakfast items range from $2.50 to $5.95.

Tus Amigos has wonderfully tasty food. The burritos are consistently huge and delicious, often lasting for a second meal (the leftovers that is). The cooks are happy to personalize your burrito with any of the following (included in the price); meat, rice, beans, guacamole, onions, cilantro and salsa. (If that's not enough for you, they also have the "Mas Grande Burrito" which adds cheese, lettuce, tomatoes and sour cream.) The meat choices cover several options of beef, chicken and pork. Our favorite is the pork chile verde, wonderfully saucy and full of flavor. The other menu item that we've regularly enjoyed is the soft taco, prepared like a traditional street taco; two soft corn tortillas filled with choice of meat, guacamole, onions, cilantro and salsa. Our favorite tacos are the pastor, chile verde (pork), and carne asada (beef). I don't recommend the pollo mole (chicken) for the taco - I expect it would work better in a burrito. A seperate section of the menu includes seafood items like salmon, fish and shrimp (tacos, burritos and enchiladas). Other items available include fajitas, hard shell tacos, tortas, taquitos, tostadas, quesadillas, as well as vegetarian options.

Tus Amigos is a small, casual restaurant with indoor dining as well as a few tables outside (shared with the Chinese restaurant next door). Prices are the same for lunch or dinner. Kids items are $3.50 but don't include a side or drink, so you might be better off ordering something from the regular menu and warning your child that they'll be living on that burrito for the next three days. Regular menu itmes are very reasonable in price and range from $1.50 to $8.95. In a time when eating out at the central coast has become a financial burden, this restaurant gives delicious options that won't send you applying for a second mortgage. They also happily accept major credit cards (not Discover).

Kids' Opinion: "Tus Amigos has great, cheesy quesadillas, really huge bean burritos, and rootbeer! The chips and salsa are great. Well, the salsas are great and the chips are good (they're kinda thick and not salted). I really like that you can watch over the counter as they make your food."
